Keppel pushes the envelope for greener digital infrastructure

Jul 2024

Data centres form the backbone of the digital economy, powering cloud computing, generative artificial intelligence, e-commerce and other applications that have become critical in the modern world. As the demand grows for more data centres with higher power capacities, so does the need for green solutions to enhance their energy efficiency and lower their carbon footprint.

With more than 20 years of experience in owning, developing and managing data centre facilities supporting mission-critical operations, Keppel is at the forefront of employing innovative solutions to create high-quality and more sustainable digital infrastructure in Singapore and across Asia Pacific and Europe.

In July 2024, Keppel DC Singapore 8 achieved the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award, the highest green accolade conferred by Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) for new data centre developments.

Built to Tier III equivalent, Keppel DC Singapore 8 is a six-storey data centre, and is the second of three planned buildings located within the Keppel Data Centre Campus at 82 Genting Lane. The first building, Keppel DC Singapore 7, was awarded the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award in 2022.

Keppel DC Singapore 8 features advanced equipment and designs that reduce water consumption, as well as improve the energy-efficiency of its data hall cooling and facility management systems to enable more sustainable operations. Its development also incorporated innovative methods and practices that have helped to reduce construction waste.

Mr Galen Lee, CEO of Keppel Fund Management, the manager of Keppel Data Centre Fund series, which partially funded the construction of the first two buildings, said, “Sustainability is an integral part of how Keppel creates value for our stakeholders, and we are delighted that Keppel DC Singapore 8 has been conferred the internationally recognised BCA Green Mark Platinum Award. As a global asset manager with deep operating capabilities, Keppel is well-placed to match our investors featuring innovative green data centres.”

The first two buildings in the Keppel Data Centre Campus have a combined net lettable area of approximately 190,194 sq ft (17,670 sqm) and have been fully-leased to clients from across the cloud services, internet enterprise and telecommunications sectors. Meanwhile, development plans for the third data centre building are underway.

With an overall Power Usage Effectiveness of about 1.3, the Keppel Data Centre Campus will support the adoption of greener solutions, as well as offer additional power capacity to support the growth of Singapore’s digital economy.

Mr Wong Wai Meng, CEO of Data Centres, Keppel, said, “The Keppel Data Centre Campus demonstrates Keppel’s deep capabilities, as an asset manager and operator, to deliver both critical digital infrastructure that the world needs as well as high-quality alternative real assets that investors seek. Harnessing Keppel’s operating expertise in digital infrastructure, renewables and clean energy, we will continue to push the envelope for sustainable data centres and future-proof our assets as we explore more ways to optimise resource efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.”

With our deep operating expertise, Keppel is also the designated operator and facility manager for both Keppel DC Singapore 7 and Keppel DC Singapore 8.
