Keppel and Nokia Sign MOU to Bolster AI Data Centre Innovation and Strengthen Quantum Safety

14 November 2024

  • Keppel and Nokia will build and design AI-ready data centres and address evolving quantum threats

  • Keppel’s Connectivity Division will augment the partnership with its deep expertise in GenAI, hybrid cloud management and data centre modernisation services

Keppel Ltd. (Keppel), through its Connectivity Division, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Nokia Solutions and Networks Singapore Pte Ltd (Nokia SG) to jointly explore the designing and building of new AI Data Centres (AI DCs), which will leverage quantum protection to address sophisticated quantum computing threats, as well as explore new technologies that are instrumental in supporting the growing enterprise demand for GenAI training and inferencing workloads.

These include the development of Quantum Safe Data Centre Interconnects, which are quantum-safe ciphers, as well as low-latency and software-defined networks that enable the secure transfer of data across AI DCs. The low-latency network design enables real-time communication and applications, significantly strengthening the use cases for enterprises deploying GenAI and mission critical systems – especially in the fields of finance, healthcare, and autonomous systems.

Through the partnership, GPU-as-a-Service will be offered to enable enterprises to benefit from scalable and on-demand access to graphic processing units (GPU) and unlock the best-fit computational power that is necessary to support emerging GenAI use cases.

Mr. Manjot Singh Mann, Keppel’s CEO of Connectivity and CEO of M1 said, “The surge in enterprise demand for AI necessitates us to evolve our data centre offerings to effectively support these workload-heavy use cases. At the same time, businesses should be empowered to harness the power of AI with an absolute peace of mind. This collaboration with Nokia SG underscores our commitment to provide enterprises with advanced AI DCs underpinned by quantum-safe connectivity to support the data-intensive needs of AI and GenAI applications.”

Mr. John Harrington, Senior Vice President, Asia Pacific of Nokia Network Infrastructure Sales said, “We are excited to collaborate with Keppel which will bring together Keppel’s connectivity expertise in building data centres and regional systems integration capabilities for the enterprise and public sector market, and Nokia’s leading IP and Optical connectivity and Data Centre solutions. With this industry leading technology, we will collectively help our customers grow revenue and take advantage of Private AI Network, enhancing our ability to serve our customers and drive growth in Singapore and eventually in the Asia Pacific region.”

Keppel will leverage its strong track record and expertise in the management and operation of data centres across Asia Pacific and Europe, while AsiaPac Technology Pte Ltd (AsiaPac), a subsidiary of M1 and the enterprise solution arm of Keppel’s Connectivity Division, will tap on its proven experience in Generative AI (GenAI), hybrid cloud management and data centre modernisation services to optimise the deployment of GenAI training and inference workloads in the AI DCs.

Nokia SG will conduct knowledge transfer and training to AsiaPac in AI-Ops for Data Centre Connectivity and Post-quantum cryptography to enhance the efficiency, scalability and security of AI DCs.

Enterprises can engage Keppel and Nokia to utilise Nokia's Innovation lab for Proof-Of-Concept with Nokia solutions including Data Centre Fabric, Quantum Safe Data Centre Interconnect infrastructure and Event Driven Automation software. In addition, Keppel and Nokia can support enterprises in strategising and deploying AI applications seamlessly across secure hybrid environments and GPU-accelerated infrastructures.
