Keppel Ltd. (Keppel) has pledged to donate RMB5 million over five years to the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD)[1] to uplift rural communities in China. Under the programme, which was announced at a donation agreement signing ceremony held on 19 March 2025 in Beijing, China, Keppel will support CFRD’s projects in Yunnan Province to benefit some 30 schools in rural areas in Guangnan County in Yunnan.
Keppel’s donation will fund the upgrading of kitchen facilities in the schools and provide the students with nutritious food items on every school day. In addition, Keppel will also contribute to decarbonising the schools’ operations through providing energy-saving lighting systems to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Beyond financial support, Keppel staff volunteers will also contribute to the programme by volunteering their time, knowledge and skills to encourage active learning among the students.
The donation agreement was signed by Mr Eric Goh, Chief Representative (China) of Keppel, and Mr Wang Jun, Deputy Executive Director of CFRD, and witnessed by Mr Peter Tan, Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore to the People's Republic of China, and Mr Zheng Wenkai, President of CFRD.
Mr Peter Tan, Ambassador of the Republic of Singapore to the People's Republic of China, said, “I am heartened that Keppel, as one of Singapore’s exemplary and major investors in China, is engaging in such a meaningful project with the China Foundation for Rural Development to support Yunnan’s development. It reflects Keppel’s consistent and deep interest in the development of China. This project is also one of our key initiatives to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China this year. I look forward to seeing more of such collaborations which would further deepen the friendship and ties between our two countries.”
Mr Zheng Wenkai, President of the China Foundation for Rural Development, said, “We are happy to embark on a new chapter of collaboration with Keppel, witnessed by the Embassy of Singapore in China. We extend our gratitude to Keppel for selecting the China Foundation for Rural Development once again as its partner in supporting rural communities in China. We are committed to leveraging our capabilities to ensure the successful implementation of the programme.”
Mr Eric Goh, Chief Representative (China) of Keppel, said, “Keppel is committed to making a positive impact in the communities where we operate. On the occasion of the celebration of 35 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, we are delighted to continue our partnership with CFRD to support the development of rural areas in Yunnan Province. This donation underscores our dedication to contributing to the well-being of local communities wherever we operate, and supporting sustainable development.”
This programme marks a further milestone in Keppel's partnership with CFRD, which began in 2018 with an initial RMB5 million collaboration focused on supporting needy students from schools in Sichuan Province and Yunnan Province. Keppel’s donation funded the upgrading of kitchen facilities in the schools and provided the students with nutritious food items and digital library resources, among others, and has benefitted more than 13,000 students since 2018.
